Note #52

Merry Christmas!

Christmas... A time to celebrate the birth of Jesus with family and friends. A time to renew friendships by sending and receiving Christmas cards. A time to socialize and have fun. A time to bake Christmas cookies. A time to purchase just the right gifts for the special people in our lives. A time to look back and remember. A time to look forward with anticipation. A time to love. A time to be grateful for all our blessings.

I can't believe it's also time to write Note #52. My final note is written to Carol, the wife of my friend who passed away unexpectedly a year ago. Steve's death was the impetus for my 52-week journey of thankfulness.

Dear Carol,

52 weeks ago, I began writing weekly notes of gratitude. As I posted on my blog the first week of January, "Oftentimes, we wait too long to let people know how they have touched our lives."

You and Steve both positively impacted my life, personally and professionally. I was blessed to work with both of you, watch your family grow, and witness the strong love you shared. One of my fondest memories is listening to Steve describe your vacation excursions. I'll always remember the hysterical laughter that surrounded the table as he related your unforgettable experiences on horseback and while snorkeling!

Thank you for adding so much joy to my life. You're a special friend.

Love,
Jill

Note #51

Congratulations to Stanford, NCAA volleyball champions. My Huskers didn't win, but I'll never stop cheering for my favorite team. I know my closest hometown friend won't give up on any Nebraska team either. Football. Volleyball. Baseball. Her Facebook posts often reference these teams as she hopes for victory.

She and I also share a long history, from the first day of kindergarten through university graduation. This week's note is written to Susie.

Dear Susie,

Bill and I hope to see you this coming Christmas weekend. We need to catch up on what's been happening in our lives, and also spend time reminiscing. We share a lot of memories! I'll always remember our high school band trip to the west coast, counting calories (and M&Ms) during our freshman year of college, cheering at Husker football games, sharing Godfather's pizza, laughing hysterically after seeing "Young Frankenstein," admiring "The Living" and avoiding "The Dead," and just plain having fun. My mom says my "true personality" comes out when we're together :-)

My hometown memories always include you. Thanks for being a special, lifelong friend.

Love,
Jill

P.S. GO BIG RED!

Note #50

WOW! The Huskers are in the Final Four! The volleyball game my husband and I saw last Friday was undoubtedly the best volleyball game we've ever seen. The talent displayed on the court by both Nebraska and Penn State players was unbelievable. The Huskers lost the first two sets, were down 22-24 in the third, and came back to win the match in the fifth. Our coach, John Cook, stated the crowd was the loudest he's ever heard in Devaney. GO BIG RED!

One of my fellow Husker volleyball fans is celebrating her birthday today. This week's note is written to JoAnne.

Dear JoAnne,

Happy Birthday! Not only are you one of my favorite fellow Husker fans, you're also one of my role models. I've looked up to you ever since we moved here. I admire your friendly personality, your sense of style, and your devotion to personal health. You introduced me to weightlifting, bridge club, women's golf league, and a stint as a piano teacher.

Now that you travel frequently, our paths seem to cross less often. Hopefully, I'll see you on the golf course or at a Husker tailgate again soon!

With gratitude for your friendship,
Jill

Note #49

Am I a huge Husker fan? Absolutely! Husker athletics and UNL academics rank at the top. Red Husker clothing items fill my closets, and every time I shop, I head right for the Husker merchandise.

The Husker volleyball team is defending their 2015 National Championship, and the road to the Final Four looks tough. This Friday's match against perennial Big Ten rival Penn State will be a biggie -- and thanks to my stepmom, Carol, we're going to be at the Devaney to cheer the team on to victory! This week's note is written to her.

Dear Carol,

You absolutely made my day when I got your text saying Bill and I will have tickets for Friday's Nebraska-Penn State volleyball match! We're so excited! Thank you!

In fact, thanks for also opening up your home to us this fall throughout the Husker football season. Your B&B is at the top of our list - immaculate surroundings, wonderful breakfasts and desserts, and animated, loyal Nebraska fans. I'm so grateful for everything you've done for us over the years. We always have so much fun together :-)

There are only three words left to say: GO BIG RED!

Love, Jill

Note #48

In appreciation for a special young woman, this week's note is written to our daughter-in-law, Megan.

Dear Meg,

Thank you for hosting "Thankschristmasgiving" again this year. Our family loves to celebrate and share laughs in your beautiful home -- enjoying delicious food, playing silly games, observing our special Christmas gift tradition, and being entertained by Piper. Jordan is blessed to have such a bright, beautiful, generous, funny, and talented woman as his wife -- and we're grateful you joined our family.

I've written weekly notes since January, and Note #48 was saved especially for you. I'm privileged to call you my daughter-in-law.

Love,
Jill

Note #47

It's Thanksgiving week, time to count our many blessings, and eat delicious food! My visit to the grocery store included filling my shopping cart with items needed to prepare a familiar recipe. This week's note is written to Juel, a friend who shared this recipe many years ago.

Dear Juel,

As I look in my kitchen cupboard and think about Thanksgiving dinner, I'm once again reminded of you. Our 1992 P.E.O. cookbook included your recipe for "One" Vegetable Casserole. Over the next 24 years, I've made that recipe too many times to count. I printed it in both our family and church cookbooks, but with a new name: Jordan's Favorite Vegetable Casserole! It's served at every family holiday meal because dinner just wouldn't be complete without it.

Thanks for sharing the recipe. It holds a special place in our family memories.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Note #46

Last Thursday marked 16 years since my breast cancer diagnosis. The phone call I received that Friday afternoon will forever be etched in my memory. A related afternoon, several weeks later, is also memorable. This week's note is written to my friend, Sharon.

Dear Sharon,

16 years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer and you stepped up to support me. I'll never forget the afternoon we spent shopping for wigs. What could have been a traumatic event turned out to be so much fun! I have laughable memories of seeing myself as a redhead and a blonde. We both tried on numerous wigs in a variety of styles and colors. When I think about that day, I do so with a chuckle and a grateful heart.

Thanks for being my friend, your generosity, and always making me laugh.
Love, Jill

Note #45

Our daughter and her husband live in Wisconsin. When Sarah moved there 10 years ago, we were nervous and apprehensive. Sarah didn't know a soul, was starting a new job, and oh - by the way - also has mild cerebral palsy. Just thinking about Wisconsin winters made me fearful for her safety. How would she get around? Who would shovel all that snow? How in the world would she manage to navigate icy sidewalks and parking lots?

My fears were unfounded. Sarah got along just fine. Her outgoing personality propelled her to become active in a church, join a women's organization, meet new friends, and ask for help when needed. A few months after arriving, she met her future husband and the rest is history.

Sarah and I absolutely love FaceTime! We talk face-to-face twice a week, usually on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. In fact, we concluded our Sunday visit just a short time ago. I love to hear about her activities, friends, and family during our "technology time together."

I'm so proud of her and everything she's accomplished. There are several special individuals who worked diligently during her preschool and early elementary years: speech pathologists, school psychologists, occupational therapists, teachers, and one special physical therapist. This week's note is written to him.

Dear Bill,

I just finished talking with Sarah. She's lived in Wisconsin the past 10 years, is married, and has a wonderful job at Menards corporate office. She never would have accomplished everything she's done if it weren't for you. Your professionalism was top-notch, but it was your personality and caring that meant the most. Sarah loved to see your smiling face, even when it meant arriving at 7:30 a.m. for PT. You guided us to seek orthopedic treatment at Shriners Hospital and in Omaha, always keeping Sarah's future in mind. Thank you so much for being such an important part of Sarah's life - and of mine.

Gratefully,
Jill

Note #44

Tomorrow is Halloween -- and memories of Halloween 1991 come flooding back. A late fall blizzard hit the state that year. Halloween trick-or-treating was postponed, and our anticipated move was delayed a week. In fact, this was such a momentous event that our 1991 family Christmas letter was entitled "Twas the Night Before Halloween," a parody of "The Night Before Christmas."

Fortunately, for the past 25 years, we've been fortunate to live in that beautiful, new home. This week's note is written to our home builder, Mike.

Dear Mike,

Halloween weekend reminds me of our 1991 move into our newly constructed home. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for you and your crew for building our beautiful and comfortable home. The craftsmanship is superb and we truthfully enjoyed every minute of the building process. Thank you for designing and constructing a structure that is now filled with 25 years of special family memories. It's not simply a house. It's our home.

Gratefully,
Jill

Note #43

This week, medical appointments are on my calendar. I always get just a little nervous on the days preceding my mammogram and subsequent visit to the oncologist. I say a prayer. Lose a few pounds. And thank God for all the blessings in my life. One of those blessings is Tami, and this week's note is written to her.

Dear Tami,

Almost 16 years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Many medical appointments followed, necessitating frequent six-hour, round trip drives to meet with physicians and discuss treatment options. One such appointment was impossible for Bill to attend. With no family members nearby, you volunteered to ride to Lincoln and back with me as I met with the surgeon who minced no words in telling me, "You could die from this." We stopped at a Chinese restaurant for dinner on the way home. I'll never forget either the fortune I removed from the cookie ("You will enjoy a long and happy life.") or how much I appreciated your kindness, uplifting words, and friendship on that difficult day. Thank you.

Note #42

It's already Thursday! WOW! Due to a stretch of exceptionally busy days and nights, I've been unable to post my latest note. However, the recipient has been on my mind for many hours.

Last week, our agency hosted a four-day accreditation review. As one of the lead organizers, for the past few months, my work focused on this external review. Documentation and artifacts related to each of the five standards were linked to a Google Site. These items, along with presentations and interviews, helped to "tell our story" in a truthful, straightforward fashion.

Stating the truth. Sticking to the facts. Being honest. These personal attributes are discussed daily as they relate to our current political scene. Many years ago, a former administrator shared some simple advice that has remained with me over the years. This week's note is written to Don.

Dear Don,

Years ago, you shared some advice. This simple statement has stuck with me ever since. Your words? "Always tell the truth because then you don't have to remember what you said." I've attempted to follow this advice and instill the same values in my children. Also, thank you for encouraging me to continue my education, for without your trust in my abilities, I would never be where I am today.

Gratefully,
Jill

Note #41

I didn't have anyone special in mind for today's post. However, as I was preparing dinner just a few minutes ago, I knew who needed to receive this week's note of thanks.

The chicken and rice casserole entrée that I prepared is my "go to recipe." I think it's about time I thank Debra for sharing this recipe with me.

Dear Debra,

This afternoon as I was preparing my favorite chicken and rice casserole dish, I realized I've never taken the time to thank you for sharing the recipe with me over 25 years ago. It is truly my "go to dish" for family dinners, potlucks, and special events. I've shared the recipe with many others, and it's even printed in our family cookbook. Tonight, I'll think of you with every delicious bite!

Thank you, keep on cooking, and I hope our paths cross again soon.

Note #40

I just purchased a ukelele. Why? I truly have no idea except I want to learn something "new" that brings back memories of my childhood.

As a fifth grader, beginning ukelele instruction was part of our music curriculum - and I loved it! So much, in fact, that I used my birthday money to buy a ukelele. I remember lying in a hammock, singing songs while playing simple chords on my uke. I wonder what the neighbors thought?!

This week's note is written to my friend and P.E.O. sister, Pat.

Dear Pat,

Guess what? I bought a tenor ukelele last week! Your P.E.O. program lit a fire within me and I knew I simply had to get one. The four basic chords I learned 50 years ago stayed with me, but I've discovered that my fingers aren't nearly as nimble as they were when I was 10! However, I'm determined to challenge my brain as I attempt to strum harmonious sounds from this instrument. Thanks for being the impetus for this musical adventure!

Jill

Note #39

I've been a Make-A-Wish Wish volunteer for over 10 years. Over this time, I've been touched in numerous and varied ways by Wish Children and their families. Today was no exception as another volunteer and I met with a young boy and his family as the child unveiled his hope for a wish. It's wonderful to see the smiles on faces of Wish Children, and give families a chance to forget about illnesses and hospitalizations for a while.

Several children, and one little girl in particular, are responsible for my volunteerism. This week's note is sent to Molly.

Dear Molly,

Congratulations on beginning your freshman year of college! It seems like just yesterday that you entered kindergarten. Your journey and experiences during those early elementary years were an inspiration for many individuals, including me. As a result, I've volunteered with Make-A-Wish for over 10 years. Being a Wish Granter is absolutely the most rewarding volunteering I've ever done. Thank you for serving as the spark that led me to become a Wish Granter.

Wishing you continued health and a bright, successful future.

Note #38

I love to read! When I was small, my mom signed us up for a Book-Of-The-Month Club. My sister and I eagerly awaited the arrival of a new Dr. Seuss book each month! We also subscribed to Humpty Dumpty's Magazine for Little Children, Jack and Jill, and Highlights for Children. I devoured Trixie Belden, Donna Parker, and Nancy Drew books. Archie comic books, teen magazines, Life, Look, and newspapers filled our home and provided ongoing opportunities to read. Plus, we were regular visitors at the local public library.

I'm still a patron of our wonderful public library. For many years, I've participated as a member of a monthly book discussion group. This week's note is written to Jennifer, the librarian who initiated this group and encouraged me to belong.

Dear Jennifer,

Last Thursday as we completed our monthly book discussion, I realized I've never taken the opportunity to thank you for encouraging me to participate. We have banded over books - a diverse group of individuals who primarily see each other only once a month at the library. Although it's wonderful to spend time with women who share a love for reading, it's even better to broaden our horizons by becoming acquainted with new faces, reading books we may not have chosen for ourselves, and learning about varied perspectives. If it weren't for you, this book club - and many other library programs - would not exist. So, thank you.

Gratefully,
Jill

Note #37

Where were you on 9/11? Fifteen years ago on September 11th, I spent the entire day with a co-worker. We drove 150 miles that morning to attend a 1:00 meeting in another city...and then drove 150 miles to get back home later that afternoon. Radio broadcasts were our constant companions that day. As we listened, the tragedy unfolded. The city was hushed, fellow restaurant patrons silently watched TV newscasts, and we could barely eat our lunch. As we drove home, cars were lined up at gas stations, waiting to fill their tanks while gas prices quickly increased. We couldn't wait to get back to be with our families.

This week's note is written to Jean, a special co-worker, world-traveler, and friend.

Dear Jean,

My thoughts are returning to 9/11 and the day we spent together. I'll never forget that day as long as I live. Do you remember hearing a loud roaring sound that startled us because we knew all air traffic had been grounded? We looked up as Air Force One passed directly overhead. Your personal experiences and stories of living in Peshawar gave me a unique perspective as we traveled six hours to and from our meeting. My memories of 9/11 will always include you -- and I'm grateful you were by my side.

Praying for peace and understanding,
Jill

Note #36

My careers in education and nursing have given me many opportunities to work with outstanding individuals. One who stands out is Elleah. This week's note is written to her.

Dear Elleah,

I don't tell you often enough how much I enjoy working with you. I appreciate your work ethic, positive demeanor, ability to face a problem situation head-on, and willingness to articulately speak your mind. You take on challenges and welcome new initiatives when you believe they will benefit our employees and organization. You watch out not only for those of us on the job, but also for your friends, nurturing relationships by truly caring for others while sharing a smile and a laugh.

Thank you for all you do for me.

Note #35

Today is our son-in-law's birthday...and this week's note is written to him.

Dear Joe,

Happy Birthday to an outstanding son-in-law! I remember a statement Pastor Mark made during your wedding ceremony. During pre-marital counseling, he asked you what you wanted from life. Your response? "I want to be a man of God." Your life is a sparkling example of just that. Your words and actions exemplify God's love. You're a faithful friend, a dedicated worker, and a cheerful volunteer. You show empathy for others and affection for your family, plus you enjoy socializing and having fun. Most of all, you've brought joy and love to Sarah's life.

I'm proud to call you my son-in-law.

Love,
Jill

P.S. You've also awesome at board games, especially those involving trivia :-)

Note #34

You may have guessed from some of my earlier posts that education and music play huge roles in my life. In my professional role as an educator, I'm privileged to serve schools, teachers, and students in schools across our area of the state. In my community, I often play the piano for weddings, funerals, church services, and other events.

I also used to play the alto sax. I still remember lugging that huge, heavy instrument home. I couldn't wait to start 5th grade band and practically taught myself how to finger all the notes before practice ever started. I loved band, I loved playing my saxophone, and I loved being part of our community's hugely successful band tradition. Of course, it takes a special teacher to motivate students.

This week's note is written to that man, my favorite teacher of all time, Mr. Straatmann.

Dear Verle,

This morning as I listened again to the beautiful song you wrote for Janie, my mind wandered back to an elementary band practice at Franklin School. You played "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" on the piano using major 6th chords. Whenever I hear a major 6th, see a marching band, or hear "Moonlight Serenade," I think of you. Most of my favorite memories of school revolve around band. Of all the wonderful teachers I had, you were the only one who inspired me to achieve goals I never knew I had. Once in a while, I'll open the case of my also saxophone. The beautiful instrument and smell of cork grease takes me back to high school band and all the special memories.

Thank you for motivating me - and our entire band - to be the best. We were definitely #1.

Gratefully,
Jill

The new school year has begun! At our staff meeting last week, I was reminded of all the talented, dedicated, and knowledgeable professionals who serve our schools, and with whom I've been privileged to work. A few individuals stand out. This week's note will be sent to Corey.

Dear Corey,

Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! Whenever I think of maintaining professionalism at school, and also incorporating humor, my thoughts immediately head your way. You have such a knack for communicating and instilling fun at work, yet displaying technical expertise. It's obvious you truly care about students, faculty, staff, and administrators. I'm honored to call you "friend."

Keep smiling :-)

Note #32

"I could just sit around making music all day long
As long as I'm making my music ain't gonna do nobody no harm
And who knows maybe I'll come up with a song
To make people want to stop all this fussing and fighting
Long enough to sing along.

I believe in music
I believe in love
I believe in music
I believe in love
--Lyrics to "I Believe in Music" by Mac Davis

Ever since I was a small child, music has held a special place in my life. Several of my previous notes have addressed this love for music. Today's note is no exception. It's written to my friend, Gloria.

Dear Gloria,

You and I have enjoyed so many musical highlights over the years. Thank you for broadening my horizons by asking me to accompany the Andrews Sisters. Performing 40's music with the three of you was so rewarding and fun! Of course, Elf Jill also enjoyed playing the keyboard for Mrs. Claus prior to Christmas. I'm convinced "people who believe in music are the happiest people I've ever seen."

I bet you agree!
Jill

"Music is love and love is music if you know what I mean
People who believe in music are the happiest people I've ever seen
So clap your hands and stomp your feet and shake those tambourines
Lift your voices to the sky tell me what you see.

I believe in music
I believe in love
I believe in music
I believe in love."

Note #31

I just returned from our annual Administrators Days conference. This time each year, school administrators from across the state gather for three days to network with colleagues, learn from educational professionals, and be inspired by keynote presenters prior to the beginning of school.

With the new school year just around the corner, this week's note is written to my current administrator, Bill.

Dear Bill,

As we approach the start of a new school year, it seems appropriate to write a short note thanking you for everything you do for ESU 8. Your fun, engaging personality and sincere interest in coworkers help make our working environment positive. We're accomplishing great things and eagerly anticipate the future due to your visionary thinking. Under your experienced leadership, you've helped us all grow as professionals. I look forward to continuing our work as we lead, serve, and support our schools.

Gratefully,
Jill

Note #30

We just returned from a summer vacation that included driving 3,500 miles through 15 states. After spending over 72 hours together in the car, you might wonder how we survived. Three words: iPhone map app. I doubt we would have successfully navigated unfamiliar roads without this marvelous little app.

On the other hand, my sister-in-law uses paper maps, friends, and strangers to assist whenever she travels -- and does she travel! Nanette has been in all 50 states, plus almost 80 countries. In fact, she'll "hit" #80 when she flies to Albania next month.

This week's note is written to her.

Dear Nanette,

You are definitely my "traveling role model." I admire the way you embrace new experiences and travel independently, sometimes in remote and unknown areas. Mostly, I love how you maintain lifelong friendships around the world. If an award for "The World's Best Friend" was given, you'd definitely win! Your giving spirit, generosity, acceptance of differences, and friendliness are unsurpassed. Plus, you love to have fun!

Thanks for sharing your love for travel and for exemplifying what true friendship is.

Love,
Jill

Note #29

Last week I wrote a note to one of the first people I met when we moved here. That fall, I started my first teaching position and was privileged to work not only with super students, but also with some very special coworkers. This week's note is written to one of those teachers, Laurel.

Dear Laurel,

I've never told you "thanks" for getting me involved with the Mrs. Jaycees/YWON. You were so friendly at school, and encouraged me to attend a meeting. Wow! From making gallons of homemade ice cream for the Old Mills Days social, preparing and serving Thanksgiving dinners, organizing kiddie parades, and enjoying progressive dinners, we were definitely involved! I'll never forget the time you asked me to help you make frosting roses to decorate cupcakes we were sharing with residents of the nursing home. After watching me struggle to create a presentable rose, you finally demoted me to making green leaves -- and boy, was I grateful!

I have wonderful memories of not only volunteering with that organization, but also being given the opportunity to meet other women and develop friendships. Thanks so much!

Jill

Note #28

It's unbelievable that I've called this small town "home" for over 36 years. When we first moved here, one of the first places I visited was the public library. This week's note is written to Ruth.

Dear Ruth,

I'll never forget my first visit to our local public library. You were working behind the desk, welcomed me to town, and told me I needed to meet your daughter. Every time I returned, you greeted me, often with reading recommendations, and always with a smile. Even though you're no longer behind the desk, I think of your dedication to the library and our community frequently. I also rarely purchase a book because I can check one out for free at the public library!

Happy Reading!
Jill

Note #27

Oh my goodness! Today is Monday -- and I forgot to write my weekly thank you note. It'll be posted later today (after the parade and other July 4th festivities). Sorry.

Later......

The parade is over, the float is stored, and the fireworks display will be held at sundown. Our small rural town celebrates the 4th with three full days of activities -- turtle races, scavenger hunt, fishing contest, hole-in-one competition, party in the park, and more. If you ever want to experience a small town Independence Day celebration, this is the place to come!

One of the parade entries was a local gentleman who rode in a horse and buggy. He participates annually and often can be seen giving rides to families at other times during the year. This week's note is written to him.

Dear Dave,

It was great to see you riding in the parade today! Thanks also for asking about Sarah's recent wedding anniversary. One of my favorite memories includes you and Sarah.

When she was in the third grade, her class went roller skating in Plainview. While the other students skated, she sat and watched. You noticed her sitting alone, encouraged her to put on a pair of skates, and helped her navigate around the skating rink for the very first time in her life. I still remember hearing her squeals of excitement and seeing the broad smile on her face. Neither Sarah nor I will ever forget your kindness.

Thanks for bringing smiles to so many people. You hold a special place in my heart.

Gratefully,
Jill

_______________

On another note, my heart is heavy this evening. Earlier today I learned that a friend to whom I wrote an earlier "note of thankfulness" died after a long battle with breast cancer. Jolene was absolutely the kindest woman I've ever known. Please say a prayer for her family.

Note #26

"Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint."

When Sarah was in the seventh grade, she had extensive reconstructive surgery on her leg. The surgery was scheduled for Good Friday in a children's hospital located a three-hour drive from our hometown. Her hospital room was filled with Easter gifts -- flowers, stuffed animals, and baskets loaded with Easter candy and eggs -- while family and friends visited to bring cheer and share wishes for her recovery.

However, the most meaningful message during her hospitalization was Isaiah 40:30-31, delivered by a special visitor - our new pastor. This week's note is written to him.

Dear Pastor,

Over Easter weekend 1995, you stopped at Children's Hospital to visit Sarah following her extensive reconstructive surgery. During the visit, you read Isaiah 40:30-31, verses that Sarah chose as her confirmation verse the following spring, and scripture that holds special significance to us.

Although I see you often, I've never told you how much that visit meant to us. Somehow, during a very busy Easter weekend, you found time to spend time with two overwhelmed parents and one frightened seventh grader, calming our fears and giving us hope by sharing God's Word.

We are very grateful for your ministry to our family.

God's Blessings,
Jill

Note #25

I love rocks! I've always loved rocks...and I still have my childhood rock collection in the basement. Everywhere I go, my eyes seem to notice the unique rocks that surround me. Oftentimes, I will bring a rock back home from wherever I've been. My early memories include collecting mica while vacationing in Estes Park, selecting rocks from the graveled driveway at my grandparents' farm, and finding my first fossil on the playground of my elementary school.

A collection of rocks sits on my desk at work. When I turned 50, friends organized an event during which I received 50 items each day for 50 consecutive days. A close co-worker presented me with 50 rocks, complete with 50 quotations and facts that included the word "rock." Earlier this month in observance of my 60th birthday, she added 10 rocks to my special collection. This week's note is written to my friend, Becky.

Dear Becky,

Thank you for traveling all the way to Jordan and Megan's wedding. It was wonderful to have you and Ron there to celebrate their marriage. I also have a special remembrance of Okoboji with the 10 new rocks you added to my birthday collection.

Over the years, you've added so much to my life. Your ability to see the world from a unique perspective, and share that vision with others, is a quality I admire. You're thoughtful, funny, creative, and loving.

In other words, you rock!

Thanks for being my friend,
Jill

P.S. Did you know that according to A.D. Posey, rocks and minerals are the oldest storytellers? :-)

Our daughter, Sarah, and son-in-law stayed with us last week during the days nestled between two family weddings: our son and new daughter-in-law's wedding on June 4th and our niece and new husband's wedding on June 10th. My mind was full of thoughts about these three wonderful young women and how thankful I am to have them all in our family.

A dear friend's daughter will be married this coming weekend, so again, my thoughts have turned to the relationships between mothers and daughters. This particular friend has been closely tied to my daughter and me since before Sarah was even born, so this week's note is written to Cindy.

Dear Cindy,

As Tara's wedding approaches, I am reminded of the ties that exist between you, me, and our daughters. As I mentioned at Tara's shower, she and Sarah can share memories of mothers who wore the same brightly colored, polyester maternity tops, even though we are no where near the same size!

There are truly no words to convey how much your encouragement and support of Sarah during her years in FCCLA mean to us. Her success was a reflection of your commitment to the organization and your dedication to helping students achieve more than they thought was possible.

Daughters are treasured, weddings are unforgettable, and friends are priceless.

Gratefully,
Jill

Note #23

This has been a week of celebrations! Bill celebrated his 60th birthday on June 1st. Our son and his new wife, Megan, celebrated their marriage with a beautiful wedding ceremony and elegant, yet fun, reception yesterday. And tomorrow, I will celebrate another year of life.

My presence at all these special occasions depended on the medical care I received from an outstanding oncologist, beginning over 15 years ago. This week's note is written to him.

Dear Dr. Hutchins,

Tomorrow I will celebrate my 60th birthday.

Back in November 2000 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, the uncertainty of the future was absolutely terrifying. I prayed every night God would let me live long enough to see my daughter graduate from college and my son graduate from high school. Not only was I able to celebrate these events in 2004 and 2005, I've also watched them become successful, caring adults - and celebrated two weddings, including one just yesterday!

I am deeply grateful for the medical treatment and personal care that you and your wonderful professional staff have given me since January 2001. I also truly appreciate the compassion shown to my sister, Jodi. You will always hold a very special place in my heart.

I believe that every day is a gift. Thank you for helping me enjoy the present.

With Sincere Gratitude,
Jill Bates

Note #22

Happy Memorial Day! Thank you for remembering the Americans who died while serving in our country's armed forces.

Yesterday, my husband and I attended an annual potluck barbecue, held annually at a picturesque and immaculate farm located just outside of town. The couple hosting the event was honored for celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, and a special video was shown that featured Keith and Kay Lou sharing memories of their years together. We laughed and we cried. It was a wonderful tribute to a wonderful couple.

60 years! WOW! That's a long time! My husband will celebrate his 60th birthday his week, so Bill, this note's for you.

Dear Bill,

Can you believe we met almost 39 years ago? I was attracted to you partially because you were so much fun to be around. You had a crazy sense of humor, lots of friends, and lip-synced Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel," complete with dancing and cartwheels, years before lip-syncing was in style. Over the years, you've continued to add fun to my life. The Tuna Museum, Happy Jack Chalk Mine, Unclaimed Baggage Center, Holiday Day Inn "Guests of the Day," and "howsyurmomnem" rank high on my fun vacation memories. Times when the kids were growing up, like the "human leaf smashers," still bring a smile to my face. Even now, simply sharing a family meal is usually filled with laughter.

I'm anticipating 39 more years of craziness and chuckles! Thanks for sticking with me all these years.

I love you.
Jill

P.S. Happy 60th Birthday! Let's celebrate at our son's wedding this weekend. It should be fun!

Note #21

As you can tell from last week's post, I've spent many years working in education, three in the classroom as a high school biology teacher and the last 16 in administration. However, my professional career actually began as a school nurse. For 18 years, I worked as a school nurse in K-12 schools, and I've supervised school nurses for an additional 29. Hmmm...as I look at those figures, it appears that I've been working in education for 66 years! Hold on. Several of the positions were concurrent. For example, for 13 years I served as a school nurse and supervised the other nurses on staff.

Today, my administrative position includes also serving as the School Nursing Coordinator -- and I absolutely love my school nurses! Last week, I may have written that teaching is the most important profession. This week, I'm proud to add that school nursing is the best profession ever!

Dear ESU 8 School Nurses,

You make a difference in so many lives during your daily work with students, families, and school staff. You also impact my life in more ways that you'll ever know. You've taught me about service, humility, and dedication. Your actions exemplify compassion, hopefulness, and professionalism. Most of all, you've shown me the importance of maintaining a sense of humor, having fun at work, and establishing supportive friendships.

When you’re a nurse, you know that every day, you will touch a life or a life will touch yours. Thank you for touching mine.

Gratefully,
Jill

Note #20

This weekend was filled with graduation celebrations. Memories of my own formal educational experiences and several influential teachers came flooding back. Today's note is written to my first grade teacher.

Dear Carolyn,

One of my first memories of school is a self-portrait that hung on the bulletin board in the first grade classroom at Franklin Elementary School. I drew a picture of myself, announcing "When I grow up, I want to be a teacher." In the drawing, I was dressed in a brightly colored dress with a full skirt, just like one that you wore in our classroom. You were a six-year-old girl's hero.

At home, my playtime was spent pretending to be a teacher. Dick, Jane, Sally, Puff, and Spot held important places in our basement playroom, right beside Dr. Seuss, the Palmer Method, and a chalkboard mounted on the wall. I loved creating bulletin boards for my mom's classroom, serving as a high school teacher's aide, and helping elementary math students as a summer school assistant.

Even now, after working for 37 years in the field of education, I can't think of anything else I'd rather do. Thank you for being a role model and inspiring me to become an educator. I truly believe teaching is the most important profession in the world.

Gratefully,
Jill

Notes #19

It's Mother's Day - a day to celebrate our mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, mothers-in-law, stepmothers, and anyone who serves as a mother. It's also a time to celebrate being a mother. This week's note is written to my children.

Dear Sarah and Jordan,

Thank you for being my reason to celebrate Mother's Day. You've both taught me so much, and continue to teach me what it means to be a mom. I've learned about patience, integrity, honesty, and perseverance. You taught me how to make sandwiches with that dreadful mayonnaise and spend hours conversing on FaceTime. You introduced me to Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, YMCA basketball, flag football, and Junior Olympics track meets. Care Bears, Ninja Turtles, Cabbage Patch Dolls, Koosh Balls, Yahtzee, Super Soakers, and balls of all shapes and sizes surrounded us. The hours I spent cheering for both of you at academic and athletic competitions rank high on my list of memories. The "waving game," family vacations, holiday traditions, Special K bars, refried beans, and vegetable casserole hold special significance, as does the list of "50 Reasons Why We Love Mom" that greets me every morning from its place on the dresser. Laughter, humor, and fun are part of our family life.

I never realized the depth of love between a mother and child until I became a mom, too. You're both very special to me in your own unique ways. Remember that I'm here for you - always and forever.

I love you.
Mom

P.S. I'm sorry we were unable to go to the fish hatchery today. Maybe next year - ha ha!

P.S.S. I've taken great joy in watching you become such wonderful young adults. Sarah, your positivity, willingness to serve, empathy for others, and sincere friendships portray your deep faith in God and love for mankind. Jordan, your leadership skills, human insight, strong friendships, and ability to make us laugh demonstrate your strong-willed personality and love for life. I am proud to be your mom.

Note #18

Today is May Day, a special day that brings back fond memories of creating, delivering, and receiving May baskets back when I was an elementary student. After placing the basket carefully on the doorstep and ringing the doorbell, I remember trying to "get caught" by a few boys in my class. However, I probably wasn't the girl they wanted to catch, so I never did get a May Day kiss.

One boy in my class stands out in my May Day recollections. This week's note is written to Richard.

Dear Rich,

Happy May Day from a former Franklin Elementary School classmate! I have memories of you delivering a beautiful lavender May basket to my home when we were in either fifth or sixth grade. I'm guessing that your mom "made you do it" -- and that every girl in our class received one, too.

I actually have a lot of school memories that involve you, like the time Dawn and I sold you a large number of salamanders and toads that we'd collected from neighborhood window wells. Do you recall playing a piano duet with me entitled "Leaky Faucet?" I think we were the "stars" of the third grade school recital! Most of my humorous memories associated with band include you. Band Banquet skits, the long bus ride on our Band Trip to the Rose Festival and World's Fair, stage band performances, etc., etc. "Those were the days!"

Happy Memories!
Jill

Note #17

We occupied our regular near-the-back-of-the-sanctuary pew in church this morning. From this vantage point, my eyes rested on a dear lady whom I've admired for many years. This week's note is addressed to her.

Dear Jolene,

From the back of church today, I watched you worship with your family. Over the years, I've observed your willingness to work hard, not only on the farm, but at numerous community, school, and church events. I've heard your sympathetic voice at funerals and witnessed your healing touch at the hospital. You seem to know just the right time to share a smile and a kind, caring word of encouragement. Resilience seems to be your middle name, and a strong faith in God is your anchor. I am privileged to call you "friend."

FROG,
Jill

Note #16

My dad is an exceptionally talented and gifted athlete. He played college basketball, participated in collegiate track and field, and was honored to be named to his college's Athletic Hall of Fame. After his college days ended, he played on men's AAU basketball teams, was a softball pitcher, participated in Master's track meets, and held the national decathlon record for his age group. I even remember giving him a shot put for Christmas one year!

As a child, I remember playing lots of wiffle ball games, practicing my high jump, being asked to run a timed mile, learning how to water ski, and throwing a Frisbee around the yard. We were always outside doing something!

Basketball was always in the forefront. Serious games of HORSE were often played in the driveway, and he never simply let his grandson win without a heated struggle. In fact, Dad could make an unbelievable number of consecutive free throws, and also shoot a beautiful jump shot when he was well into his 70s.

Daily pushups and exercises were part of his routine. Even now, at the age of 81, he continues to workout whenever he can.

This week's note is written to my personal MVP.

Dear Dad,

Every day, I attempt to follow your example by eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep. Over the years, I've watched you eat a healthy diet including fruits and vegetables, limiting alcohol, and never forgetting how a small portion of ice cream or dessert helps round out a meal :-) Your commitment to daily physical activity and weight control encourages me to exercise every day. And of course, what could be better for health than a nap?

Thank you for being such a positive role model for our entire family. We are all healthier because of you, our family MVP. You'll always be our "first" place winner!

Love,
Jill

Note #15

Two days ago, we celebrated the life of my mother-in-law.

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

Arlene loved flowers, house plants, and garage sales. She collected vases and crystal. Traveling, cooking, and dancing were at the top of her list. She never met a stranger. She loved her family...and we loved her.

One special family member offered Arlene assistance, love, and support practically every day. It's almost impossible to express to my sister-in-law how much this meant to us, but I'm going to try.

Dear Rosie,

Words alone can never convey how grateful we are for all you did for Arlene. Over the past years, you unselfishly shared your time to care for her in so many different ways. Never once did we hear you complain about all the hours you spent checking on her at home, accompanying her to the doctor, cleaning her house, decorating her room, washing clothes, preparing meals, fixing her hair, and everything else you did. You were an ideal and loving daughter-in-law to Arlene, and a wonderful sister-in-law to us.

We love you!
Jill and Bill

Note #14

These last two weeks have been emotional, to say the least. There are so many notes of gratitude that I could -- and should -- write to family members. However, I'm emotionally drained and too exhausted to write a sentimental note this evening.

I need some smiles right now, so this week's note is being written to my friend, Anita.

Dear Anita,

Every day when I check my Facebook page, I look forward to reading your latest posts. You have embraced retirement and your creative spirit to the utmost! From ukeleles to knitting, from watercolor painting to spinning wheels, and from barn quilts to weaving, your enthusiasm is contagious. Thanks for sharing your adventures, interests, and love for life.

'Hoping to be a "creative woman" someday soon, too!!

Note #13

He is risen! He is risen, indeed! Alleluia!

Today is Easter, my favorite holiday of the entire year. On Easter morning, I love gathering at church to greet the risen Son, singing "Jesus Christ is Ris'n Today" (which just happens to be my all-time favorite hymn). Every year, singing that joyful melody brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes.

I absolutely love Easter -- and I also absolutely love jelly beans :-) Thus, this week's note of thankfulness:

Happy Easter, Pat!

Thanks so much for the jelly beans! You always remember that they're my favorite :-) You are also a favorite role model of mine. I'll never forget your thoughtfulness when I was going through chemo and radiation, ongoing kindness that has continued for over 15 years. You've taught me the importance of reaching out to others who need a little pick-me-up from a friend. Thanks for everything you do for others, never asking for anything in return. You are a definite ray of sunshine in my life.

Gratefully,
Jill

Note #12

Yesterday I called 911. Was I scared? Absolutely. Is everything okay now? Yes, much better than anticipated.

This recent experience made me realize how grateful I am for our local EMTs, doctors, nurses, and hospital personnel. Although I planned to write a different Note #12, the one I'm writing today is more important.

Dear AMH Staff and EMTs,

Thank you so much for the professionalism and expert care that _______ received this past weekend. From the arrival of the EMTs to the goodbye at dismissal, he was in such good hands. We appreciate every caring action and gesture. Your staff truly exemplifies your motto: Healing Body, Mind, and Spirit.

Our family is so thankful for Antelope Memorial Hospital. Over the years, many of our family's most memorable and important events were related to AMH. From our children's births, physical therapy, ambulance service at high school football games, ER visits, x-rays, lab work, cancer treatment support, and clinic appointments, you have all been an important part of our lives.

Thank you for providing exemplary health care for our family.

Gratefully,
Bill and Jill ____

Note #11

I love music! Music speaks to my soul in a way that words alone are unable to do. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of singing while seated in the back seat of the car. Whenever we traveled, we sang.

From an early age, I was intrigued by the piano, teaching myself to play simple songs from our neighbor's John Thompson books before finally beginning piano lessons at the age of seven. Mrs. Oleson lived just down the block. Every week, I'd walk to her home for my 30-minute piano lesson, come straight home and immediately learn next week's songs so I wouldn't have to practice. Fortunately, I did display a little talent, so after Mrs. Oleson quit teaching, I learned from Mrs. Perry, and finally from Dr. Bates at the college.

However, my best piano teacher sits in the church pew in front of me each Sunday. His name is Jerry.

Dear Jerry,

There is no way I can ever repay you for taking me out of my "piano comfort zone" and encouraging me to accompany the men's gospel quartet. To say I was overwhelmed and anxious when practices started would be an understatement. To admit that I grew to enjoy the experience would be the truth. Learning how to chord and improvise made me a much better musician. I can never thank you enough for all you've taught me.

Thank you for sharing your talents and love of music,
Jill

Note #10

Oh my goodness! It was bound to happen, and it finally did. I forgot to write a note yesterday. This is precisely the reason the messages are posted on a blog. I needed something to keep me accountable for my decision to write 52 notes of thankfulness. This blog is definitely doing the trick!

A couple weekends ago, my husband and I were fortunate to visit a dear friend. She resides in a retirement community and will celebrate her 91st birthday next month. Hope is a former coworker, and the most loyal and avid Husker fan I know!

Dear Husker Hope,

It was so wonderful to spend some time with you! The years we spent in neighboring offices remain special to me. You were always a wonderfully supportive professional advocate, encouraging me to serve on state committees and become involved with Drug-free School and Community events. Of course, we were also the only women in the office who loved sports! Many Monday mornings, you and I could be found either celebrating Nebraska athletic team victories or lamenting heartfelt losses. I will always think of you whenever I hear cheers of "Go Big Red!"

I'm grateful for our friendship.

Jill

Note #9

Friends are the sweet spots in my life. I'm privileged to experience friendships at many different levels -- childhood friends and college friends, friends who live nearby and friends who live miles away, friends at work and friends at play. One friend in particular touches my life in a special way.

Dear Janet,

Thanks for celebrating my mom's birthday with me yesterday. It's always so much fun to spend a day together driving, talking, shopping, eating, and simply having fun.

I've learned a lot from you over the years, but mostly you've taught me about true friendship. I've watched you devote a significant share of your time simply "being there" for your wide circle of friends -- preparing meals, driving to appointments, helping in the home, and volunteering to assist in any way that is needed. You diligently phone, write, email or text to make sure that everything is okay and let others know they're in your thoughts. Your thoughtfulness is an outward display of the love you feel for others.

I greatly value our friendship. Thanks for always being there.

FROG,
Jill

Note #8

When I started writing this blog, I mentioned to my daughter that I didn't intend for the notes to be overly sentimental or emotional. I intend to remain true to this statement.

Throughout the coming weeks, I may be writing notes to family members. Although I could compose flowery language to tearfully thank my family for their unconditional love, support, trust, and on and on, I am not going to do so. Perhaps I'll do this at another time. If and when I do, these words will be private and not shared online.

On to Note #8.

My mom will celebrate a birthday this week. I love to spend time with my mom! We have so much fun together and share a lot of the same interests. Mom loves to travel and she has passed that passion on to me.

Dear Mom,

This card is perfect for your birthday, especially since you will visit your 50th state this year! WOW! Think of all the places you've been, all the new people you've met, the variety of foods you've eaten, the history and geography you've learned, and the magnificent sights you've seen! Thanks so much for sharing your love of travel and new experiences with me. I truly believe memories are the best gifts - and we have some great ones!

Happy Birthday to my favorite globetrotter!

Love, Jill

Note #7

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2000. Surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation continued throughout the next nine months, all conducted in a community located a 3-hour drive from our hometown. During the weeks I received daily radiation therapy, my daughter and I lived with family members and drove back home on the weekends. Seeing my husband and son always lifted my spirits, but one specific weekend holds the top spot in my memories.

A moose was observed in our county during the month of July. "Moose on the Loose" shirts were printed and sold in a downtown store, owned and operated by my friend and neighbor, Jeri. Attempts to locate and photograph the moose were rampant throughout the area. We did not want to be left out of the "hunting experience," and spent one Friday evening searching for this moose. Jeri, my mom, my daughter, and I drove for hours throughout the county on gravel roads, through fields, and even across a bridge that unbeknownst to us was closed because of safety factors! We never found him...but we've also never given up hope.

Thus, a moose hunting expedition has continued for over 14-and-one-half years!

Dear Jeri,

Just a quick note to let you know how much the moose hunting that began in July 2001 has added to my life. When you and I began this venture, little did we realize that we'd continue to search for moose in stores, at craft fairs, on towels and kitchen items, at Christmas, and everywhere else moose are found. It's so much fun trying to find a "new moose item," and I continue to get excited when I spot the animal while on vacation. Let's keep looking and perhaps we'll finally see a moose in our county!

Thanks for being such a great friend and neighbor. Happy Hunting!

Note #6

Kitchen towels, Pyrex baking dishes, hangers, and Velux blankets. Gifts I received from my mother-in-law were usually very practical. However, my "young adult ideas" about Christmas and birthday gifts focused on fun and fashion.

One year, she excitedly gave me a KitchenAid stand mixer with attachments, and I hate to admit that at the time, I did not appreciate this absolutely wonderful gift. Over the years, I've used it too many times to count and it ranks as my favorite small kitchen appliance. In fact, a KitchenAid stand mixer will be a gift for my future daughter-in-law at one of her upcoming bridal showers!

Dear Arlene,

Just a quick note to thank you for two of the best gifts you ever gave me. I've never told you how much I love the KitchenAid stand mixer you gave me many years ago. At the time, I was probably too young and inexperienced in the kitchen to realize that the mixer would become my best-loved small appliance. Every time I use it, I think of you and remember how much you've taught me about cooking.

During this week preceding Valentine's Day, I also want to thank you for the very best gift ever -- your son, Bill. I love him so much.

Happy ♡ Day.

Love,
Jill

Note #5

Over the years, I've been fortunate to work with some terrific administrators. Each one has touched my life. Randy is one of those special people.

He and I worked together for 14 years, and I truly believe that he's one of the finest men I've met. I admire his leadership style, his appreciation for the work of others, his humble personality, his sense of humor, and especially the love he has for his family.

One small bit of advice has stuck with me. When things seemed to get rough at work and a potential problem was looming on the horizon, he advised me to remember that it was probably "not a matter of life or death." This guidance was shared with Randy by one of his previous administrators. He's remembered it through the years, and so have I. As the song goes, "The sun will come up tomorrow."

Dear Randy,

Just a quick note to say thanks for sharing one of your long-held philosophies. I've often remembered the story you told about a former superintendent who stated that the situations we deal with at work are usually "not a matter of life or death." When times get rough or I feel overwhelmed, I take a deep breath and consider that statement. It's true! I trust that things will work out, realize that life isn't perfect, and recognize that I might have to go to Plan B. Thanks for helping me view life from this positive perspective and teaching me to go with the flow.

Gratefully,
Jill

Note #4

Our neighborhood is filled with wonderful people! A family who lives across the street includes children who regularly get our mail, collect our newspapers, and mow the lawn whenever we are out of town for an extended period of time. During the winter, I'll occasionally glance outside through the kitchen window and notice Conor shoveling snow from our driveway and sidewalks. Beth is an award-winning baker and annually treats our family with a Christmas tea ring. We couldn't ask for better neighbors.

Dear Nick, Beth, Conor and Kaylee,

Just a quick note to say thanks for being our neighbors. You'll never know how much we appreciate your willingness to help us out when we travel: collecting our mail and newspapers, mowing the lawn, and even going inside when I call to say I forgot to turn off the oven! We also love looking out the window and seeing the kids shooting hoops in our driveway. Soon both Conor and Kaylee will beat Bill regularly in H.O.R.S.E. Please let us know if we can ever do anything for you.

Thanks again.
Jill
